IDC Structure (PADI Standards-Based)

In the PADI system, candidates become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors (OWSI) by completing the Instructor Development Course (IDC) and then passing the Instructor Examination (IE).

Path Options

  • Full IDC: Complete the entire program as one course.
  • AI + OWSI: Take the Assistant Instructor (AI) course first, then complete the OWSI program.
  • Crossovers: Instructors from other agencies may qualify through the OWSI program (where applicable).

Minimum Course Duration

  • With IDC eLearning completed: minimum 6 days (performance-based)
  • If all curriculum is delivered live in class: minimum 8 days (performance-based)

Your IDC is built around workshops and teaching practice so you can perform confidently in real classes:

Ratios & Water Session Requirements

  • Ratio: 8:1 (per Course Director / IDC Staff Instructor)
  • Water sessions: For teaching practice/workshops, plan at least 4 people to role-play (at least 2 student divers).

IDC Prerequisites (Entry Requirements)

  • PADI Divemaster (or leadership-level certification from another recognized agency)
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Experience: at least 60 logged dives including documented night, deep, and navigation experience
  • Medical: physician-signed dive medical clearance within the previous 12 months
  • EFR: Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months
  • Non-PADI DM: complete the PADI Divemaster course dive rescue assessment (as required)
  • Certified diver time: certified diver for at least 6 months

Instructor Examination (IE)

After the IDC, you attend the IE (run by independent PADI Examiners). Our program is designed to make you exam-ready and, more importantly, job-ready.
